race report - tempe international tri

13:03/45:25/44:13 = 1:46 for 400/12.4/3.1

i really didn't want to race this race. i didn't even want to go. i even asked dave (half wanting him to agree with me) if he really wanted to race the day before. stupid me - his answer was and will always be yes. i know that. i was looking for an out. i just knew all that lay ahead for us, and all that we still had to do on saturday. my parents were coming in on race day so we were scattering to get things in order for them.

sunday morning i got my funny feeling. the one i got the morning of my "accident". the one that says i have no business being out there, and that i really just needed to stay home. i was really bugged about it all morning, so dave finally asked what was going on. i told him. then he started worrying too. we both decided - i'd do the swim regardless. if i still had the feeling, i'd just be done after that. i couldn't pinpoint if it was that i was racing, if it was that dave was racing, or if it was that i had family flying in the air the same day. i was just very worried about something. horrible feeling going into a very long day.

my wave went off 3rd, dave's went off after 7 so we didn't really get going quickly. i had zero intention of even bringing my wetsuit, even though last weekend it was legal. just didn't see the point. i may not be the swimmer i was 2 years ago, but in any distance sprint race, a wetsuit is asinine. i could understand maybe for the oly, but i just wanted to get in the water. it was already warm while we were waiting beachside. we got to talking to some very comical guy from the scottsdale tri club. it was a competition between he and dave with the one-liners so i just stood back and watched. and giggled. needless to say we could give a lesser crap how the race turned out. it was nice to be lighthearted after my worried morning.

it was a water start (other side of the lake - opposite imaz/rio salado/soma start) so we all got out there. mine was the first women's wave, so there's always some hooping and hollering with that. mostly by me. then the director started joking with us about the critters in the lake. swim went ok. didn't feel too badly. i always blow out my shoulders and upper arms quickly and then i settle in. had a bit of an issue with breathing - just need to get back into the pool again. the swim was fast and then we were out. out of the water we had to run up the beach, cross a road, and then climb a flight of stairs. did i say this course was stupid? this course was stupid.

T1 was semi-fast. think i was faster than last week. i was out on the bike pretty quickly. it's roughly the same bike as last week but with more (shallow) climbing. had an incident at one of the turnarounds with a stupid girl. we were approaching a turnaround in the middle of the street, but i had time to pass this guy, so i did. i was still right next to him when someone behind me yells "on your left!" to which i responded with "well, you're really not" nor should you be. i thought that was enough warning. it wasn't. she yelled on your left again, this time louder. to which i grabbed brake and gutted out "i fucking heard you". she had to swerve a bit to keep from hitting me. she was still passing when she came into the turnaround. made me feel good when she had to go outside the cones bc she was going too fast. i didn't try anything else, i was satisfied. i'd love to see what her HR profile looked like when she realized i was still right there and now she really had to put it down to leave me. bitch.

T2 was quick. and then we had to go down a flight of stairs. stupid course. mine was only a loop around tempe town lake, but it went in the opposite direction as last week. with about 0.5miles left i realized i could come in faster than last week's 5k. and then we had to go down yet another flight of stairs, and then right up a steep hill into the finish. stupid course. i had to walk up part of the uphill, and at that point i gave up on my time from last week. as it turns out though, i was only a few seconds off my time from last week, but this week's course was long by 0.12 miles, so i was actually faster! i knew my overall would be faster this time because the race was 350meters shorter in the swim. imagine my surprise when i crossed the line a whole 12 min faster!

i got to cheer for dave on the run, never saw him on the bike. he finished very strong but wasn't too talkative on the run, which worried me a bit. we gathered our stuff and were on the road again before 10am!

overall, another PR. good times. nothing happened. but that doesn't make me believe any less in my premonition feelings. i'll listen to them!!!
