dave and i have lived out in the boondocks for a good 2 years. first in woodland hills, and now in chino hills. he's been looking for a tri training partner that entire time, and the closest he ever got was the tri club. but the tri club isn't user friendly for a few reasons, one of which is any workouts require at least a 1-1.5 hr drive one way to get to the location. so, it would only figure that one week before we leave LA that a lovely couple moves in one house down. oh, the guy's a triathlete, he's a year younger than dave, he's looking to do his first IM this year. he rides this amazing (old) road bike that dave drools over.
sadly we've spent a lot of time with them this weekend. sad only because we're growing attached to them by the minute. for dave it's a total bromance (to quote my mother). for me, the wife is a year older (our birthdays are 4 days apart) and totally how i see myself in the next year. she's a housewife, they have 2 boys. it's a bit eery, but their lives have melded mine and dave's somehow. she was born 30 miles away from dave's home town. he and dave were born at the same hospital just months apart. they lived in clovis and albuquerque, nm. many many more details like that, just funky stuff. but when those things pop up it somehow endears you to them. and now we're leaving so it makes it all the more sad. he and dave are comparable riders, they've gone on a couple rides, and both times they just gush to their wives for the rest of the day about how wonderful their ride was.
i don't really know why things like this happen. we've not been very social out here for the almost 2 years we've lived here. granted, that was a choice we made. but now these people are here, and they're people we could totally bond with and grow wonderful friendships with, no doubt in my mind. it just sucks. long distance friendships are always different, we're hoping to lure them out regularly with the promise of a pool and a race or two in AZ.
this week will be a hectic one, and at this point i'm holding on by a very thin thread. my class ends tomorrow night at midnight. i have one more big paper to do and one final exam. my proactive plan for the weekend had me doing one or the other on saturday and sunday. my actual plan was vegging with the birthday boy all day yesterday and then spending hours with the new neighbors for most of the night. today we got up, had breakfast together and then dave got on the road for AZ. the final straw the underwriters felt the need to pull on us was that they demanded dave's start date be before closing. originally we were to close on the 12th and dave was to start on the 16th. luckily the folks he's going to work for were understanding and willing to help us out, so dave's 2 week long hiatus became one frantic week. he starts work tomorrow. i finish school, work tomorrow, work tuesday, and then wednesday fly out to AZ. to start the closing process. we drive back together thursday so movers can come friday bright and early. then dinner and drinks with lovely friends friday night. saturday we might get up and ride with neighbors, otherwise we'll just load up the children and head out. for the final time. i thought today would be productive, and i just found myself sitting for almost 2 hours in the front yard with my new neighbor while she watched her boys play. i'm a little lost, to be completely honest. i have so much to do, yet i can't move. i'm sad. i can't believe our time here is done. granted we truly don't have many friends left here, and that was a choice, even if unconscious. but still, those that we do have, we have to leave them. that makes me very, very sad. these new people are so awesome and it just baffles me why stuff like this happens. dave and i have both decided that for the first month or 2 when we get out there, we're making a concentrated effort to be outside a lot, to try to interact with our new neighbors. we're doing the opposite of what we've done here.
my next post (or maybe the next one after that) will come from the land of AZ!
